For many physicians, retirement planning focuses heavily on financial readiness. Years are spent building investments, reviewing pensions, and ensuring long-term financial security. Yet one of the most important questions often remains unanswered: What will life look like when medicine is no longer at the center of your daily routine?
After decades of caring for patients, leading teams, and contributing to the healthcare system, retirement represents more than the end of a career. It marks the beginning of a significant life transition. While this new chapter offers freedom and opportunity, it can also bring unexpected challenges related to identity, purpose, routine, and social connection.
Recognizing the unique needs of physicians approaching retirement, the New Brunswick Medical Society (NBMS) is pleased to offer Your Life After Retirement, an interactive workshop designed to help physicians prepare for a fulfilling and rewarding future beyond clinical practice.
This workshop encourages participants to think beyond finances and explore the personal aspects of retirement. Through guided discussions and practical exercises, attendees will gain valuable insights into creating a life that is purposeful, engaging, and aligned with their evolving goals and values.
What Participants Will Learn
During this interactive session, participants will explore how to:
- Identify common challenges experienced during retirement
- Develop a renewed sense of identity and purpose beyond medical practice
- Maintain mental, physical, and social well-being
- Create meaningful routines and structure for everyday life
The workshop provides a supportive environment where physicians can reflect on their aspirations, address concerns about retirement, and connect with colleagues who are navigating similar transitions.
Learn From an Experienced Physician and Retirement Coach
The workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Philippe Erhard, CCFP, MCFP, Dip Sport Medicine.
A retired family and sport medicine physician, physician wellness advocate, and retirement coach, Dr. Erhard brings both professional expertise and personal experience to the conversation. Having successfully navigated his own transition from clinical practice, he understands the unique opportunities and challenges physicians face when entering retirement.
His practical, physician-centered approach helps participants develop strategies for building a meaningful and satisfying life after medicine.
Interactive and Confidential Learning Environment
The workshop will be delivered live through Zoom, creating opportunities for meaningful discussion, reflection, and engagement with fellow physicians.

What Previous Participants Are Saying
“A day well spent – Motivating, resourceful and engaging speaker. Session was very interactive and thought provoking. It was a great opportunity to connect and share experiences and ideas with peers at somewhat similar career stages. Definitely helpful in starting for a healthy and fulfilling retirement from medical practice. Highly recommended!”
Dr. Paula Keating MD CCFP
“I hope the NBMS will provide and promote this workshop annually. I learned a lot and feel it would benefit any physician on the retirement spectrum! I left feeling unsettled… tells me I need to re-examine my priorities. Great workshop! Thank you for bringing it to us!”
Dr. Ann Collins
“Thank-you to the NBMS for organizing the retirement sessions. Dr. Erhard did an excellent job of facilitating discussion. He presented the participants with enough information to understand life’s challenges and opportunities after retirement, and strategies to cope with life’s changes. From the introductions at the beginning of the session, I was impressed with how freely the physicians (me included) disclosed their concerns about life after retirement and continued to contribute their ideas and feelings throughout the session. Obviously, we felt we were in a safe space with this small group. I recommend this or similar sessions be repeated regularly.”
